The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing convergence with the life sciences present enormous opportunities for societal benefit. These technologies could transform public health by enabling the development of new vaccines and treatments, while also strengthening our ability to detect and respond quickly to emerging infectious disease outbreaks. Such progress has the potential to reduce the global burden of disease and contribute significantly to economic development.

However, the same advances in AI that enable the design and engineering of biological systems—referred to here as AIxBio capabilities—also introduce new risks. They could increase the likelihood of accidental or deliberate release of harmful biological agents, potentially resulting in biological events of unprecedented scale and even a global catastrophe affecting populations worldwide.
